Short information about John Court performance works

All my performance works from 1999 to 2008 are 8 hours long

ART TRA

The performance takes place within the confines of a 240cm x 500cm raised platform. I spend the whole 8 hours performance writing on the platform on my knees. I write with my left hand – the opposite hand than I normally use for writing. My every day writing hand is immobilized behind my back. I write from right to left, and then left to right, and therefore I am always writing as I am moving. When I finish one layer of writing, I do another layer. Over the time, I cover the platform with linear layers of writing for the whole 8 hours.

Sensing Space

When the performance begins I pour a can of 9 litres white emulsion paint on to a wooden platform. Then I lay half on the platform and half on the ground. The side of my head is in the paint. I lay there for the 8 hours.

Pushing Space

On the floor six sheets of chipboard, ( 480cm by 380cm ) 2000 leads of pencils ( spread over the floor ) and a three leg table. Over the period of time I will be bent over, and push the table over the leads on the chipboards.

Standing up for 8 Hours

At the start of the performance I will pull a pair of trousers out from a can of 9 litres white emulsion paint and put them on, pour the rest of the 9l paint in the middle of a wooden platform then stand “motionless” on the platform for the eight hours. In this work, the eight hours focuses on the 8-hour working day, referencing both the work ethic and more mundane everyday chores.

Marking Space

I spread out 3000 leads of pencil over 320cm by 330cm thick paper. Using my whole body within the time ( 8 hours ) and space the lead will become more and more in contact with the paper and my body. At the end of the time there will be a recording of the movement on paper over the time by the leads.

Working Space / Surface Time
John Court & Mark Roberts

‘Working Space / Surface Time’ is an eight-hour performance with live sound which carries out an intense investigation of a specific, local space and time. Working within a defined and limited space, John Court slowly rotates, twists and contorts his body over an eight-hour period, while Mark Roberts uses sounds generated by Court’s movements to create a live soundtrack.

White Out

On the floor is a chipboard platform (4m x 4m x 10cm). At the start of the performance I pour a 9 litres can of white emulsion paint in the centre of the platform. During the performance I will limit myself to the space of the platform. I use movement, the time and the emulsion paint during the performance. After the 8 hours there will be left a recording of the time, movement and paint on the platform.

Without Space

In a space there are 2000 rubbed erasers on the floor, spread out in a circle. 4 personal stereos with speakers are located around the space, each stereo will play the sound of the erases being rubbed. I have been rubbing the rubbers for 30 minutes each day for one year.

Between Space

On a wall is a 150cm x 150cm drawing made up of pencil lines. On the floor is a mound of pencil shavings from 2000 pencils. Around the space are 4 personal stereos with speakers. The sound coming from them is a recording of the pencils being sharpened.
